A SPECTACULAR BRIDGE SPANNING THE WAIOHINE RIVER

The Carterton District Trails Trust (CDTT) is making strong progress toward a safe, enjoyable walking and cycling bridge across the Waiohine River, a key future link in the emerging Wairarapa trails network. See the artist’s impressions of the final Waiohine Bridge
design below.

A recent review confirmed that the River Road–Kuratawhiti Street route is the best place for the new bridge, a quieter, more inviting option that avoids SH2 and links easily with nearby rural roads. With support from Carterton District Council, CDTT brought on award-winning designer Dan Crocker to shape the bridge concept, which was shared with the community in May 2025.

This crossing is envisioned as far more than a bridge. It will connect communities, honour the landscape, and invite trail users to experience the stories and mana of the Waiohine awa. CDTT is partnering with Ngāti Kahukura Awhitia (mana whenua) to ensure Māori narratives are woven into the design and become a defining feature of the future Waiohine Trail.

CDTT also acknowledges the early mahi of the Greytown Trails Trust and will continue working with the Wairarapa Five Towns Trail Trust as the project moves from design toward delivery.

Crossing the Waiohine is an essential step in expanding the Wairarapa’s developing 200km trail network, and this bridge will play a central role in that journey.
